For spider vein removal, Dr. Lisa Airan performs sclerotherapy at her New York City office. The sclerotherapy procedure is the most effective way to eliminate unattractive leg veins. “Spider” veins, known medically as telangiectasia, are excessively dilated small blood vessels in the skin.

No one knows exactly what causes spider veins, but mechanical trauma (including crossing your legs), leg injuries, tight fitting clothes, obesity, long periods of standing or sitting as well as pregnancy, family history and hormones all seem to play a role. The spider veins range in color from red to blue depending on the size of the blood vessels (red=smallest; purple=medium; blue=largest).

Introducing ASCLERA™!

Dr. Airan is now offering ASCLERA™, an exciting new sclerosant recently approved by the FDA. Although approval in the U.S. is new, the active ingredient in ASCLERA has actually been used in Europe for over 40 years. Dr. Airan has special training and experience performing sclerotherapy treatments in Manhattan with ASCLERA and can achieve optimal results for men and women frustrated by unsightly spider veins and reticular veins (slightly larger veins that are located deeper beneath the skin).

Made with polidocanol, ASCLERA actually acts as a local anesthetic, making it a more comfortable sclerosant. Yet there is no compromise for comfort – ASCLERA is still highly effective and will not cause any significant damage to surrounding tissue. The benefits are clear, so maybe it’s time to get started with ASCLERA and get ready for summer!

How Sclerotherapy Is Performed

The micro-injection sclerotherapy technique consists of instilling a concentrated chemical solution (such as ASCLERA) into these tiny blood vessels using needles so small that a magnifying glass is required. This solution irritates the inner lining of the blood vessels so that they stop carrying blood and the body slowly replaces them with scar tissue that is invisible on the surface of the skin.

It is also possible to combine sclerotherapy with laser treatments. Dr. Airan can help determine if you are a candidate for Manhattan laser vein removal.

Sclerotherapy Recovery

Postoperative discomfort is usually minimal. After a treatment, normal activities may be resumed in 2 days. You will always wear fitted support hose for 7 days after treatment sessions, and sometimes we will apply compression dressings.
