Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are the focal point of the face and, as the expression goes, the windows to the soul. But often how our eyes—droopy, perpetually tired-looking—appear is not an accurate reflection of the soul, personality, or spirit that lies behind them. For those who have excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids, chronic dark circles, pronounced under-eye bags, or hollowness that results in a tired or gaunt appearance, blepharoplasty surgery may offer a solution. By tightening the eyelid skin and restoring volume to depleted areas, Dr. Born can dramatically refresh the eye area and help patients achieve an appearance that better reflects who they are.

What it Is

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is the surgical correction of excess eyelid skin on both the upper and lower eyelid, as well as surgical removal of bulging fat pockets or “bags.” Eyelid surgery can also help to restore the volume or dimension to eyes that become sunken or depressed over time. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper and lower eyelid simultaneously or individually depending on the patient’s concerns and the desired outcome, and is often paired with face & neck lift surgery for a full-picture result.

Fat grafting around the hollows of the eye, temples and cheeks is often performed in conjunction with blepharoplasty to restore volume and a more youthful contour to the eyes. During your consultation, Dr. Born will perform a physical assessment and have a thorough discussion with you regarding the changes you are hoping to see in the mirror. Based on this information, Dr. Born will then determine the best approach that will ensure the most aesthetically pleasing result.

Is it for Me?

Age is just one contributing factor in determining who may be an optimal candidate for eyelid surgery. Hereditary factors, weight fluctuation and even post-partum volume loss can also all contribute to perpetually tired-looking eyes. In fact, many patients seeking eyelid surgery describe having “heavy” lids or under eye “bags” from a very young age.

During your consultation, Dr. Born will perform a full physical assessment in order to gather the information he needs to develop a thorough treatment strategy. You will also discuss your personal goals and concerns. With all of this in mind, Dr. Born will determine which surgical technique and approach should be used in order to guarantee the best outcome with the least amount of risk.

What to Expect

Blepharoplasty requires a very delicate hand and precise surgical approach. Incisions around the eye are miniscule and carefully positioned to ensure minimal visibility, so only the most skilled, meticulous surgeons are equipped for and should be trusted to perform this procedure. Dr. Born has performed thousands over the course of his medical career and is widely considered one of the most reputable and respected surgeons in North America.

It is important to remember that eyelid surgery is not for everyone. Dr. Born will discuss all of the potential risks associated with your eyelid surgery in detail during your private consultation. You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions of the doctor, both before and after your surgery. Our pre-operative screening process is designed to determine if patients are indeed ideal candidates for surgery.
